At UCLA I took a year-long series of nine post-graduate courses in language pedagogy through the English Department and earned this Certificate in Second Language Teaching. In this program I learned how to develop and carry out lesson plans in language classrooms, how to present grammar to language learners, and how to do research on language teaching and learning. I took this certificate program in addition to my PhD program because I believe that knowing one’s academic discipline well does not guarantee that one will be a good teacher. This pedagogical training has served me well throughout my career.
